Bed Bugs
Bed bugs are obligate hematophagous (blood-feeding) parasites that infest mattresses, box springs, baseboards, and any cracks within ~5 feet of where humans sleep. They've made a major comeback in Texas in the last decade and are now one of the harder pests to evict.
Scientific name: Cimex lectularius Service area: San Antonio + within ~15 miles (Helotes, Stone Oak, Leon Springs, Fair Oaks Ranch).
At a glance
| Size | 4–7 mm adult (~apple seed size) |
| Color | Reddish-brown; engorged adults swell darker red after feeding |
| Active period | Nocturnal; peak activity 1–5 a.m. |
| Habitat in homes | Mattress seams, box-spring corners, headboards, baseboards within ~5 ft of beds |
| Famous trait | Hide-and-emerge cycle: a single fertilized female can produce a population in 8 weeks |
Identification
Look for live bugs around mattress seams; small dark fecal spots on sheets/mattress; tiny pale shed skins; clusters of itchy bite welts in a line or zigzag pattern (often called "breakfast / lunch / dinner").
Risk profile
Bites itch but rarely cause serious medical issues. The real damage is psychological + financial: people throw out mattresses, lose sleep, and have to launder everything. Spreads quickly to neighbors in apartments.
How we treat it
We use heat treatment and targeted residual insecticide. Heat treatment lethal-temps the entire room (~120°F for 90+ min) and kills all life stages including eggs. Residuals catch any survivors. We do follow-up inspection at 2 weeks. DIY sprays don't work — bed bugs are resistant to most over-the-counter pyrethroids.
